Light fluffy idlis are traditionally served with sambar and chutney. But what if we told you that you could spice up your usual idli too? It's about time you gave a spicy twist to this yummy snack with gunpowder or idli masala. If there is one thing common in almost all South Indian kitchens, it has to be a jar of gunpowder. While the core of the gunpowder recipe remains the same – urad dal, chana dal, and red chilies, some of the other ingredients undergo minor variations. These variations alter the flavour from one South Indian state to another. Prepared in every nook and corner of the southern states, spot idli can be easily made at home as well. You don't agree? Well, check out this viral video.
A home cook and blogger, Pragya (@thisisdelhi), shared a quick recipe of spot idli using basic ingredients, readily available in your kitchen. And, this is not even the best part. The spot idli recipe takes only 15 minutes from the clock. Heat a spoonful of butter or ghee, and throw in a teaspoon of cumin seeds or jeera. Follow it up, with 10 curry leaves and some chopped green chillies (optional). Saute it for a minute and add one chopped onion and a chopped tomato. Cook the mix for a while. Now, add 1:4 tsp salt and two tbsp of podi or gunpowder. Once the masala is ready, divide it into four sections.
Pour a scoop of dosa batter on top of all the sections. Cover the lid and let it cook for 10-12 minutes or untill the batter becomes solid. Remove the lid, flip it and cook it for another 4-5 minutes. Serve it with some ghee, podi and chutney.
Alongside the recipe, Pragya wrote, “Instant Hyderabadi spot idli recipe *SAVE IT FOR YOUR NEXT BREAKFAST* It turned out 10/10 If you don't live in Hyderabad then you need to cook this heavenly dish for yourself. It took me only 15 minutes to prepare it other than the preparation time.”

While people loved the quick and easy recipe of spot idli, some pointed out that it looked a lot like uttapam.
One of the Instagram users wrote, “Uttapam be like ‘me kya karu job chhodh du.'”
Another person said, “Ever heard of Uttapam.”
In the video, Pragya mentioned using dosa batter to prepare the spot idli. Taking a dig at her, a user commented: “Dosa batter is not used for idli.”
