If you're also planning a baking session with your children, here are some of the key ingredients that you need to stock up on:

1. Cocoa Powder

A chocolate cake can cheer up anyone in no time and most kids enjoy it. Simple cocoa powder can give any dessert or baked treat a wonderful upgrade. So keep it handy while you decide exactly how to satiate your sweet cravings.

2. Whipped Cream

Whipped cream is literally the best icing on the cake. Delicious velvety pastries with a layer of whipped cream are simply heaven on a platter. While you can buy different varieties of whipped cream from the market, you can also make it at home. Click here to know how

3. Vanilla Essence

Vanilla essence holds a special place in almost every cake preparation - even if the main flavour itself is not vanilla. This ingredient is certainly non-negotiable. Without it, most sweet treats just taste dull and boring.

4. Choice of Flour

There are several types of flour available in the market. Each has a different amount of gluten and a distinctive texture. All-purpose flour is among the most widely used kinds. You can also try using millet flour for healthier and nutrient-rich desserts.

5. Baking Powder

Apart from the key ingredients, remember that temperature also plays a pivotal role in determining the quality of your cake or other sweet treats. No one likes to eat undercooked and overcooked cakes. Don't forget to preheat the oven before starting the baking process, especially if your recipe specifically mentions it.

This Instant Hyderabadi Spot Idli Gets Ready In 15 Minutes! Try It Today

Light fluffy idlis are traditionally served with sambar and chutney. But what if we told you that you could spice up your usual idli too? It's about time you gave a spicy twist to this yummy snack with gunpowder or idli masala. If there is one thing common in almost all South Indian kitchens, it has to be a jar of gunpowder. While the core of the gunpowder recipe remains the same – urad dal, chana dal, and red chilies, some of the other ingredients undergo minor variations. These variations alter the flavour from one South Indian state to another. Prepared in every nook and corner of the southern states, spot idli can be easily made at home as well. You don't agree? Well, check out this viral video.

A home cook and blogger, Pragya (@thisisdelhi), shared a quick recipe of spot idli using basic ingredients, readily available in your kitchen. And, this is not even the best part. The spot idli recipe takes only 15 minutes from the clock. Heat a spoonful of butter or ghee, and throw in a teaspoon of cumin seeds or jeera. Follow it up, with 10 curry leaves and some chopped green chillies (optional). Saute it for a minute and add one chopped onion and a chopped tomato. Cook the mix for a while. Now, add 1:4 tsp salt and two tbsp of podi or gunpowder. Once the masala is ready, divide it into four sections.

Pour a scoop of dosa batter on top of all the sections. Cover the lid and let it cook for 10-12 minutes or untill the batter becomes solid. Remove the lid, flip it and cook it for another 4-5 minutes. Serve it with some ghee, podi and chutney.

Alongside the recipe, Pragya wrote, “Instant Hyderabadi spot idli recipe *SAVE IT FOR YOUR NEXT BREAKFAST* It turned out 10/10 If you don't live in Hyderabad then you need to cook this heavenly dish for yourself. It took me only 15 minutes to prepare it other than the preparation time.”

Check out the full video here:

While people loved the quick and easy recipe of spot idli, some pointed out that it looked a lot like uttapam.

One of the Instagram users wrote, “Uttapam be like ‘me kya karu job chhodh du.'”

Another person said, “Ever heard of Uttapam.”

In the video, Pragya mentioned using dosa batter to prepare the spot idli. Taking a dig at her, a user commented: “Dosa batter is not used for idli.”

Hungry In Hostel? 5 Tips To Eat Healthy On A Student Budget

For many college students, the struggle to balance a tight budget while maintaining a nutritious diet is all too real. While Maggi is commonly the last resort to replace that revolting watery dal from the Hostel Mess or that mango juice as breakfast after running late for the 8 AM class, it is not the most nutritious option on a regular basis. However, we understand the importance of finding healthier and more budget-friendly meal options to fuel your college journey. So here are some hacks and meal ideas for you to rely on.

Here Are 5 Tips To Eat Healthy On A Student Budget

1. Don't Forget Breakfast

Balancing the demands of 8 AM classes and ensuring you get a full 8 hours of sleep can make breakfast seem like a negligible task on some days. It's easy to overlook or skip breakfast altogether when faced with a hectic schedule. However, skipping breakfast is not a healthy habit and can have negative impacts on your overall well-being. To help you tackle this challenge, we've compiled a list of simple and easy breakfast options that you can enjoy even while standing in those crowded metros during your morning commute. These breakfast ideas are designed to be quick, convenient, and nutritious, so you can kickstart your day on the right foot without compromising your precious time or health. Say goodbye to breakfast skipping, and try these hassle-free choices for a better and more energised college experience.

  • Smoothies: Smoothies are the quickest and can be nutritionally dense if you choose the right ingredients. The best thing about smoothies is that they can be customized to your own preferences. Here are some quick and easy smoothie recipes that you can try.
  • Overnight oats: Prepare oats with milk (or a dairy-free alternative) and add your favourite toppings like fruits, nuts, seeds, or a drizzle of honey. Let it sit in the fridge overnight, and you'll have a delicious and convenient breakfast waiting for you in the morning.
  • Chia seed pudding: Mix chia seeds with milk and a touch of sweetener (honey, maple syrup, or agave) and let it sit in the fridge overnight. In the morning, you'll have a thick and nutritious chia seed pudding. Top with fruits and nuts.

2. DIY Snacks

Instead of buying pricey packaged snacks, try making your own at home. Makhane (fox nuts), popcorn, and roasted nuts are easy to prepare and can be customized to suit your taste preferences. For a sweet treat, consider making energy balls using oats, peanut butter, honey, and dried fruits. These homemade snacks are not only budget-friendly but also healthier alternatives to store-bought options. Preparing your snacks in bulk can also save you time and effort throughout the week.

3. Plan and Budget Wisely

Creating a budget for your food expenses is crucial. Allocate a specific amount for groceries each week or month and stick to it. Planning ahead will help you avoid impulse buying and ensure that you make the most out of your money. While college life often involves outings and eating out with friends, allocating a separate budget for such activities can prove beneficial. Enjoying occasional treats is acceptable, but regularly consuming fast food or eating out can be hard on both your body and wallet. Planning meals at home and eating out less frequently will help you save money while also making healthier choices.

4. Frozen Foods Can Be Your Friend

Frozen fruits and vegetables are a cost-effective alternative to fresh produce. They retain their nutritional value and are often cheaper, plus they have a longer shelf life, reducing the chances of food waste. Buying frozen berries and mixed vegetables can save you time and prove to be an affordable hack for nutrition.

5. Master Simple And Versatile Recipes

Learning a few basic recipes that use inexpensive ingredients can be a game-changer for your budget. Developing basic cooking skills will not only save you money but also allow you to explore various flavour combinations. For example, Overnight Oats require only a few ingredients, and you can create different variations by adding fruits, nuts, or honey. Scrambled Eggs are quick to make and can be paired with whole-grain bread for a nutritious and budget-friendly breakfast. Sandwiches, with endless filling options, are another excellent choice for a satisfying meal that won't break the bank. Investing time in developing basic cooking skills will pay off in the long run and allow you to explore various flavour combinations.

Embrace the opportunity to get creative in the kitchen and discover the joy of exploring new flavours while keeping your college life healthy and budget-friendly.

5 Tips For Making Halwai-Style Jalebis In Your Own Kitchen

The joy of biting into a crispy jalebi, perfectly glazed with sugar syrup, is incomparable. This sweet delight has been an all-time favourite dessert in India and is a must-have during festivals and special occasions. The jalebis we get at halwai shops have an incredibly satisfying quality that keeps us coming back for more. They manage to strike the perfect balance between crispness and sweetness every single time. On the other hand, when we attempt to make jalebis at home, something always seems to go wrong. The colour might not turn out as orange as expected, or they might not be as crispy as desired. If you're looking to master the art of making halwai-style jalebis at home, we've got you covered with some easy tips.
Also Read: Want To Make Halwai-Style Soft Rasmalai? Follow These 6 Easy Tips

ag48kqmo

Indian Cooking Tips: Here Are 5 Tips For Making Halwai-Style Jalebis At Home:

1. Use High-Quality Maida:

Maida (all-purpose flour) is the primary ingredient in jalebis, providing structure and shape. Therefore, it's crucial to use high-quality maida when preparing the batter. This ensures they turn out perfectly crispy, akin to the ones found in halwai shops. Avoid using maida that has been stored in your pantry for too long, as it might not yield the desired results.

2. Incorporate Ghee For Added Richness:

When preparing the batter, don't overlook the importance of adding ghee. This golden delight enhances the richness and imparts a distinctive flavour to the jalebis, resulting in an incredibly divine taste. While the quantity of ghee can be adjusted according to personal preference, it's recommended to be generous with it. After all, if jalebis aren't indulgent, what else could be?

3. Be Generous With The Flavourings:

Another hallmark of halwai-style jalebis is their distinct flavour. Saffron (kesar) is commonly used to infuse jalebis with aroma and a beautiful orange hue. Additionally, elaichi (cardamom) or rose water can be used for the same purpose. Neglecting to add these flavourings could lead to bland jalebis.

4. Allow The Batter To Ferment:

Once the batter is prepared, it's advisable to let it ferment for a few hours, ideally overnight. This process enables the batter to absorb flavors fully and aerates it, resulting in a soft texture for the jalebis. If time is limited, the extended fermentation can be skipped by incorporating yogurt instead, which will yield similar results.

5. It's All About The Sugar Syrup:

The appeal of jalebis lies significantly in their sugar syrup. Achieving the right consistency for the syrup is crucial; otherwise, the jalebis might lack their signature sweetness and flavour. For a halwai-like experience, create a sugar syrup that strikes a balance between thin and thick consistencies. Ensure that it coats the jalebis evenly and doesn't drip excessively.

6. Cook On The Right Flame:

The flame's temperature plays a pivotal role in jalebi preparation. Cooking them over high heat might cause the exteriors to cook rapidly while the interiors remain undercooked. Moreover, excess oil absorption could result in greasy and soggy jalebis. Maintaining a low to medium flame promotes even cooking.

How To Prevent Jalebis From Becoming Soggy?

Let's be honest: soggy and mushy jalebis are far from enjoyable. Anything deep-fried tends to become soggy over time, which is why savouring them immediately while they're hot and crispy is recommended. After frying, ensure to drain excess oil thoroughly, as this contributes to potential sogginess. Also, exercise caution with sugar syrup, as over-soaking the jalebis can introduce excess moisture, whether in the form of oil or syrup.

Making halwai-style jalebis isn't as daunting as it may appear. While practice is necessary, following these simple tips will accelerate your mastery of this art.

Lesser-Known Pan-Asian Dishes Gaining Attention In The Indian Food Scene

The culinary tapestry of India is known for its vibrant flavors and diverse dishes. While timeless classics in Indian cuisine have held their place as staples, an interesting transformation is reshaping the culinary scene in India. In recent times, an exciting shift towards Asian cuisine has emerged, captivating the palates of many. From Chinese and Korean to Japanese delicacies, alongside a spectrum of other Asian flavors, this new trend has taken root. The surge in popularity can be attributed to the distinct and diverse taste profiles of Asian dishes, further fueled by their increasing availability in restaurants and food establishments across the nation.

We delve into some lesser-known Pan-Asian dishes that are gaining recognition and winning the hearts (and taste buds) of so many food enthusiasts.

Here Are Less-Known Pan-Asian Dishes That Are Becoming Popular In India:

1. Salmon Ceviche: A Fusion of Cultures

Salmon ceviche finds its roots in Nikkei cuisine, a delightful blend of Peruvian and Japanese influences. This fusion brings together the freshness of Japanese seafood with the zest of Peruvian flavors. The star ingredient here is tiger's milk - an invigorating concoction of lime juice and spices that bathes the salmon in a burst of tangy and spicy flavors making it a refreshing appetizer. Salmon Ceviche introduces a different dimension to raw fish, catering to those who seek a burst of flavors beyond the simplicity of traditional sashimi.

2. Spicy Hamachi Maki: A Flavorful Twist

Hamachi maki hails from Japan, but the spicy hamachi maki takes it a step further by infusing it with Peruvian flavors. This dish showcases the art of combining traditions to create something unique. What sets the spicy hamachi maki apart is the addition of "kakidane," crunchy morsels that provide a delightful contrast in texture to the dish. The spicy hamachi maki stands out with its bold flavors and the addition of kakidane, giving it a satisfying crunch that traditional rolls lack.

3. Hong-yu Wonton: A Traditional Sichuan Delight

Despite its widespread popularity, the hong yu wonton remains a traditional Sichuan preparation. Its authenticity sets it apart, making it a rarity in the culinary landscape. The unique flavor in this dish comes from the combination of Sichuan peppercorn and rice vinegar, creating a tantalizing balance of heat and acidity. While traditional steamed wontons are beloved, the hong yu wonton elevates the experience with its Sichuan peppercorn-infused sauce, offering a fiery kick and distinctive flavor profile.

The combination of bananas and milk has been a topic of debate for a while. While some argue that it's a great pairing, others recommend avoiding mixing fruits with milk. To put an end to this controversy once and for all, we consulted nutritionist and macrobiotic health coach Shilpa Arora. She clarified, "Banana with milk is a great option for bodybuilders and those looking to gain weight or needing energy for high-intensity work. This dish is also enjoyed as a wholesome meal in Bengal and is known as 'Doodh-kola-rooti.' You can utilize leftover rotis from your previous night's meal for this recipe. Begin by heating a cup of milk and allowing it to reach room temperature. Then, add one large or two small bananas and coarsely mash them. Adjust the sweetness with jaggery according to your taste, mix well, and relish it with roti.

Boost Your Energy Burn: 10 Easy Ways To Speed Up Your Metabolism After 30s-40s

Weight loss is a journey affected by several factors, metabolic rate being one of the most important ones. As we age, our metabolism tends to slow down, leading to potential weight gain and decreased energy levels. However, fear not! There are plenty of effective and simple ways to rev up your metabolism, even as you enter your 30s and 40s. By making a few lifestyle adjustments and incorporating these easy practices into your routine, you can supercharge your energy burn and maintain a healthy weight.

Here Are 10 Easy Ways To Speed Up Metabolism After 30s And 40s:

1. Prioritize Strength Training

As you age, your muscle mass naturally declines, which can slow down your metabolism. Incorporating regular strength training exercises can help counteract this effect. Focus on weight-bearing exercises like squats, lunges, and push-ups to build and maintain lean muscle mass.

2. Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water is crucial for maintaining a healthy metabolism. Dehydration can slow down bodily functions, including digestion and calorie burning. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water a day to keep your metabolism running smoothly.

3. Eat Protein-Rich Meals

Protein has a higher thermic effect compared to carbohydrates and fats, meaning your body expends more energy to digest it. Include lean protein sources like chicken, fish, tofu, and legumes in your meals to give your metabolism a natural boost.

4. Don't Skip Meals

Skipping meals can signal to your body that it needs to conserve energy, slowing down your metabolism. Aim for regular, balanced meals and incorporate healthy snacks to keep your metabolism active throughout the day.

5. Get Enough Sleep

Quality sleep is essential for a healthy metabolism. Lack of sleep can disrupt hormonal balance and lead to weight gain. Aim for 7-9 hours of restful sleep each night to support your body's metabolic processes.

7. Spice Up Your Meals

Certain spices, like cayenne pepper and turmeric, contain compounds that can temporarily boost your metabolism. Adding these spices to your meals can have a small yet noticeable effect on your energy burn.

8. Stay Active Throughout the Day:

Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine by taking the stairs, going for short walks, or doing quick exercises during breaks. Even small bursts of movement can add up and keep your metabolism engaged.

Sandwiches are loved in all their shapes and textures. Whether it's a simple cheese sandwich or an elaborate one with multiple ingredients, they always manage to satiate our hearts to the core. To make them at home, you must invest in a good sandwich maker that allows you to create a variety of sandwiches. If you're planning to buy a new one or upgrade your older model and are feeling confused about where to start, we're here to help guide you. We have enlisted some factors that you must consider when buying one. But before that, let's explore the different types of sandwich makers available on the market so that you can make the right choice for yourself.

What Are The Different Types Of Sandwich Makers?

1. Panini Press:

A panini press is perfect for making grilled sandwiches. It has ridges on the plates that help create grill marks on the sandwich.

2. 4-Slice Sandwich Maker:

As the name suggests, this sandwich maker has four slots. It allows you to cook four sandwiches simultaneously and is perfect for large families.

3. Toaster Sandwich Maker:

A toaster sandwich maker allows you to toast your bread perfectly. It comes with two slots and is ideal for those who like their sandwiches super crispy.

4. Griddle Press:

Unlike any of the above-mentioned sandwich makers, a griddle press has a flat plate and does not come with any slots. It can be used to cook all types of sandwiches.

Here Are 5 Factors To Keep In Mind Before Buying A Sandwich Maker:

1. Consider the size:

The concept of one-size-fits-all doesn't hold true when buying a sandwich maker. The market is filled with a plethora of options, which can make it quite confusing to pick the right one for yourself. If you're someone who cooks sandwiches regularly and has more members in your family, a 4-slice sandwich maker would be optimal for you. On the other hand, if you live alone, have a smaller family, or do not cook them as often, a 2-slice one would suffice.

2. Check its power capacity:

The power capacity of a sandwich maker determines how swiftly it's able to heat the plates inside. If you buy one that comes with high wattage, you'll have your sandwich ready in just a matter of minutes. Whereas a sandwich maker with low wattage will take a longer time to cook your sandwich and even consume more electricity. A good sandwich maker will have a wattage of around 700-750 watts.

3. Assess the inner surface:

Most of us do not pay attention to the inner surface of a sandwich maker when buying it. However, it's a vital factor to consider if you wish to enjoy hassle-free cooking. Often, we struggle to remove the sandwich from the maker as the bread or cheese gets stuck. To avoid this, opt for a sandwich maker that comes with a non-stick coating, which will prevent this messy situation.

4. Check the handle:

The quality of the handle is another factor that you should keep in mind. Always buy a sandwich maker that comes with a heat-resistant handle made of stainless steel to safeguard your hands. A rubber coating on top is an added advantage. Avoid buying ones that have a plastic handle or don't seem sturdy enough, as they'll end up breaking easily.

5. Temperature control:

If you wish to customize the toasting or grilling level of your sandwiches, purchase one that comes with temperature control features. This way, you can adjust the texture of your sandwich according to your personal preferences. It is particularly beneficial for those who cook sandwiches regularly and also like to experiment with the recipes.

Now that you know about these tips, keep them in mind and make an informed decision while buying a sandwich maker for your kitchen. Happy cooking!

9 Hidden Truths Of Food Labels: What You Need To Know

In today's fast-paced world, processed food has become an integral part of our daily lives. To ensure consumer safety and empower individuals to make informed dietary decisions, regulatory bodies in each country establish comprehensive guidelines for labelling processed and packaged foods. In India, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FASSI) assumes this role, enforcing mandatory labelling regulations that are vital for both manufacturers and consumers. While labels offer crucial insights about the product, it's essential for consumers to comprehend the information presented, enabling them to prioritize their health and safety.

Food Labels: The Components You Need To Know

Food labels comprise various components that provide key details about the product. As savvy consumers, understanding these elements empowers us to make healthier choices. Here's what you need to look for:

1. Statement of Identity: Defining the Product

The statement of identity vividly describes the product's nature. For instance, a container of cheese spread might read, "XYZ Cheese Spread - Crafted from 100% Pure Milk, Enhanced with Oregano." This section might also include usage recommendations, such as "Bake, Spread, Dip."

2. Net Weight: Gauging Quantity

The net weight, representing the product's weight excluding packaging, should be prominently displayed on the front panel.

3. Manufacturer Information: Who's Behind the Product

The label must identify the manufacturer, packer, or distributor. If these roles are fulfilled by distinct entities, the label should indicate both, e.g., "Packed for ABC by So & So."

4. Manufacturing and Expiry Dates: Time Frames for Consumption

Essential dates, including the manufacturing and expiry dates, must be printed. Additionally, products might include a "Best Before" date, indicating the period of optimal quality.

5. Ingredients List: Breaking Down the Components

The ingredients list should encompass all added components, with the primary ingredient listed first, followed by descending order based on quantity. For blended products like sauces, individual components should be specified.

6. Nutrition Facts: Unveiling Nutritional Composition

The Nutrition Facts section reveals the product's nutritional content. This information must be scientifically accurate. FASSI mandates specific details, including:

  • 'Sugars': Monosaccharides (e.g., glucose, fructose) and disaccharides (e.g., maltose, sucrose).
  • 'Added sugars': Monosaccharides and disaccharides incorporated for flavour.
  • 'Fat': Comprehensive lipid content, including saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and trans fats.
  • 'Dietary fibre': Inclusive of natural or added fibres.
  • 'Nutrients': Constituents that provide energy, metabolic functions, or support growth and well-being.

7. Nutritional Information: Serving Size and More

The nutritional information per 100g/ml or per serving must be provided. Moreover, the label should indicate the percentage contribution to the Recommended Dietary Allowance, calculated based on specific daily requirements.

8. Enrichment Claims: Nutrient Additions

If a product claims to be enriched with particular nutrients, the label should specify the quantities of these added elements, such as minerals, proteins, vitamins, amino acids, or enzymes.

9. Daily Value (%DV): A Nutritional Guideline

The %DV reflects how much a nutrient in a serving contributes to daily requirements. The range indicates its significance:

  • 5% or less: Low content (e.g., fats).
  • 10%: A source of the nutrient.
  • 15%-20%: A good source of nutrients.

Serving Size and Beyond - Understanding Portion Control

Serving size details, including the number of servings in a pack, help consumers understand portion recommendations. Serving sizes can be indicated in grams, millilitres, or common household measures. For accurate consumption calculations, it's crucial to differentiate between serving sizes and net contents.

Cracking the Code: Demystifying Misleading Terms

FASSI has established stringent definitions for terms that can be misleading. For example:

  • 'Natural': Reserved for single foods derived from natural sources, minimally processed.
  • 'Fresh': Applicable to unprocessed foods, potentially peeled, cubed, or chilled.
  • 'Pure': Limited to single-ingredient foods without additives or avoidable contamination.

This overview serves as a foundation for understanding food labels. Given the dynamic nature of labelling regulations, staying informed is essential for safety and transparency. As a nutritionist, I encourage patients to thoroughly review nutrition information, focusing on components like added sugars, fats, and serving sizes. By comparing ingredient lists to health claims, one can make more educated choices.
In conclusion, navigating food labels effectively empowers consumers to make health-conscious decisions. By deciphering these labels, you're equipped to prioritize your well-being while enjoying the convenience of processed foods. Choose wisely and stay healthy.
