This Bangladeshi Woman Set A World Record By Eating 37 Rice Grains Using Chopsticks

Eating many rice grains, that too with a chopstick, is a seemingly impossible task. On February 17 2024, a Bangladeshi woman Sumaiya Khan aced the challenging task of eating rice grains with chopsticks. Guinness World Records recently dropped a video on Instagram documenting the feat. In the clip, Sumaiya Khan eats 37 rice grains in one minute using chopsticks. After finishing the task, she was seen celebrating her achievement. “Most rice grains eaten in one minute using chopsticks- 37 by Sumaiya Khan, hashtag Guinness world records, hashtag officially amazing,” read the caption.

According to GWR's website, Sumaiya Khan broke Teland La's previous record of eating 27 rice grains in one minute using chopsticks, which was set in April 2022 in Stanford, California.

This is not the first time people worldwide have amazed us with their record-breaking moments. Previously, a Frankfurt-based man Felix von Meibom made a Guinness World Record by drinking a cup of coffee at lightning-fast speed. He was found gulping the caffeinated drink in a mere 3.12 seconds, shaving off 0.05 seconds from the previous record holder. The remarkable accomplishment happened in September 2023. Click here to read in detail.

Before that, Leah Shutkever made a world record by eating a bowl of pasta at the fastest speed. The Guinness World Records' official Instagram handle shared a short clip showcasing her achievement. According to GWR's website, the British woman set the record in London in August 2023. She was also mentioned as a serial Guinness World Records title holder for speed eating. In the video, Leah savoured a bowl of spaghetti mixed with what looked like a tomato-based sauce in just 17.03 seconds. Full story here.

The Guinness World Record holders have left us in awe, especially in the food category.

6 Ways You Are Ruining The Lifespan Of Your Fridge

An unsung hero of your kitchen, yes we are talking about the mighty fridge! From keeping your vegetables crisp to milk fresh, it quietly does its job. But are you treating it right? Turns out, some of your everyday habits might silently be running the lifespan of your fridge. Yes, while you are busy prepping food for the next day or looking around for midnight munching, your fridge might be working extra to keep things up and running, and ignoring your tiny mistakes. But, for how long? If you, like us, love to maintain your kitchen appliances, then we are here to help you do your part. After all, buying a fridge can take a toll on your pocket. So, let's see how you might be (unintentionally) ruining your fridge's lifespan.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Here Are 6 Ways You Are Ruining The Lifespan Of Your Fridge:

1. Overstuffing It With Food

We have all been there where we stack up every last container of leftover food into an already packed fridge. But you are doing it wrong. When you overstuff your refrigerator, air can't circulate properly, and the fridge ends up working extra to keep everything cool. This won't just mess up the fridge's temperature but also force the compressor to overwork. So, you might think you are saving food but are just overloading your fridge's capacity.

2. Not Paying Attention To The Coils

Out of sight, out of mind? Not when it comes to your refrigerator. Those dusty coils at the back or bottom of your fridge are important to keep things cool. When they are covered with dust and grime, your fridge would need to work harder to release the heat. This just puts extra stress on your fridge. To clean it, you don't need any fancy equipment – just switch it off, take a brush and clean away the dirt.

3. Setting The Wrong Temperature

If you decrease the temperature to keep to chill your drinks, you might want to pause. Setting your fridge too cold doesn't just waste energy but also forces the compressor to work overtime. The ideal temperature for a fridge is between 3-5°C. If you are lowering it this, you are putting unnecessary pressure on your fridge.

4. Not Paying Attention To Fridge's Seal

Have you ever noticed those tiny gaps in your fridge door not closed properly? Well, that's a bad sign! The rubber seals around the door are there to keep the cool air intact in the appliance. When they are dirty, cracked or worn out, your fridge ends up losing cool air and forces it to work twice as hard to maintain the temperature. Clean them regularly or get them replaced if you see something unusual.

5. Leaving The Door Open

Leaving and thinking about what to eat won't magically appear food in your fridge! Yes, the fridge is light and cool but leaving the door open for a few extra seconds makes the fridge work harder to cool things down. Every time you leave the door open, warm air rushes in, and your fridge has to fight hard to keep food cool inside. So, the next time you want to linger, make a decision quickly and shut the door. Your fridge (and pocket) will thank you later.

6. Ignoring Weird Noises

Your fridge is not supposed to make weird noises! If you hear buzzing, rattling or any other weird noise (which is not a compressor), it is time to pay attention to it. These sounds could be of a faulty motor or fan that can actually lead to a full breakdown of your appliance. Don't wait until the fridge stops working altogether. Call a technician when you hear those funky noises. Remember, regular maintenance is the key to keep your fridge up and running for long.

Can Dates And Raisins Help Increase Your Iron Levels? Here's What You Should Know

Iron is what keeps our blood healthy and flowing. It's a mineral that helps in the production of red blood cells, which carry oxygen from our lungs to the entire body. While some individuals are naturally blessed with high iron levels, others may not be as fortunate. For them, the only practical solution is to turn to foods in the kitchen pantry. Of course, spinach and seafood are the go-to options for increasing iron intake, but some also consider dates and raisins. But is this really true? Can these dried fruits actually increase your iron levels, or are they not as effective? Recently, nutritionist Amita Gadre took to her official Instagram to reveal the truth about this.

So, Do They Really Boost Your Iron? Hear It From The Expert:

According to Amita, one shouldn't solely rely on dates and raisins to boost their iron intake. She says, "A 100-gm serving of dates has approximately 0.89 mg of iron and 286 calories. On the other hand, a 100-gm serving of raisins has 4.26 mg of iron and about 300 calories." The nutritionist further explains that an adult female requires 29 mg of iron per day, which both of these are unable to fulfil. So, if you consume more dates and raisins, you'll end up increasing your calorie intake but your iron levels may still not be sufficient. Therefore, it's best to exercise portion control while eating these sweet treats and incorporate other sources of iron into your diet. Take a look:

What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Iron Deficiency?

  • Lack of energy or unexplained fatigue
  • Pale skin

What Foods Are Highest In Iron?

So, if not dates and raisins, what are the foods that can really help increase your iron levels? While spinach and other green leafy vegetables top the list of iron-rich foods, many people find them boring or may dislike their taste. If you fall into this category, Amita suggests including foods like rajma, chickpeas, sesame seeds, and flaxseed in your diet. Apart from these, you can also opt for soya beans and amaranth. Is It Okay To Drink Orange Juice Every Day? The Answer Might Surprise You...

Whether it's a complimentary breakfast during a vacation or a quick sip after your workout session, you will find a way to include orange juice almost everywhere. And why not? It is refreshing, loaded with nutrients and gives you an instant morning boost. Since it is not too bitter, a glass of fresh orange juice is more likely to find takers than maybe amla or bitter gourd juice. But when it comes to drinking it daily, it can get a little tricky. Sure, it has its own set of benefits, but is it really that healthy that you consume it every day? If you have the same question about the humble OJ, then you have landed on the right page. Let's see if a daily glass of orange juice is a yay or a nay.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Orange Juice?

1. Boosts Immunity

Orange juice is packed with vitamin C, which helps keep your immunity strong. This can keep you protected from cold, flu, and other inflammatory diseases.

2. Keeps Skin Healthy

Struggling with dull skin? Orange juice can do wonders for you. Not only is it packed with vitamin C but also antioxidants which play a major role in fighting free radical activity. Free radicals can make your skin look dull and also promote wrinkles and ageing. The abundance of vitamin C in the orange juice can help you get youthful and radiant skin.

3. Strong Bones

It is a known fact that orange has a lot of calcium content in it. This can help with your bone health and keep them strong. Our skeleton is all bones so it is important to keep the structure strong. Fun fact: orange is packed with flavonoids like naringenin and hesperidin which is anti-inflammatory and may help relieve arthritis pain.

4. Kidney Stones

As per the popular book ‘Healing Foods' by DK Publishing, oranges have high amounts of citrate concentrate. This means that when you drink orange juice, it can help break down calcium oxalate stone formation and provide relief from kidney stones.

5. Heart Health

Orange is packed with hesperidin – which according to ‘Healing Foods' – can help reduce symptoms of hypertension. Pectin and liminoid compounds found in oranges can help slow down the hardening of arteries and also reduce bad cholesterol levels in the blood.

Is It Okay To Drink Orange Juice Every Day?

No, but occasionally. While orange juice is packed with the goodness of this tangy fruit, juicing in general is not a recommended way to get its benefits. We spoke to nutritionist consultant Rupali Datta to know if drinking orange juice every day is recommended or not.

1. Removes The Good Part

While oranges are packed with fibre, which helps keep you full and your digestive system happy, orange juice lacks it. As per the expert, when you juice an orange, the fibre is mostly removed and you are only left with a glass of sweet water with nutrients. Fibre helps in slowing down sugar absorption and removing toxins and waste material from your digestive system.

2. Sugar Overload

Many people prefer buying packaged juice rather than juicing oranges themselves. You'll be surprised to know that most of the market-bought orange juices are packed with sugar, and have added colours and preservatives to make it tastier. Even if you are juicing oranges at home, you will be using 3-4 oranges which could be too much sugar consumption for the day. As per Datta, this could lead to sugar overload. “At the end of the day, orange or any other fruit is simple sugars. You should rather have 3 oranges as a whole than juice them.”

3. May Lead To Dumping Syndrome

Too much orange juice can lead to dumping syndrome. For the unversed, dumping syndrome is when foods that are high in sugar move from your stomach into your small bowel too quickly after you eat. This leads to large amounts of undigested food to rush to your small intestine. You might experience abdominal cramps, nausea, or even blood sugar fluctuations. Since orange juice is pretty high in sugar, you might experience dumping syndrome if you consume it regularly.

So, you can certainly have orange juice occasionally for its benefits but in moderation so that you don't ruin your health.
