Why You Can't Board A Plane With Coconut In Your Baggage

Food Banned in Flight: If you frequently travel by air, you likely know the items that can't be packed in the cabin and check-in baggage. Being aware helps you pack confidently and prevents last-minute panic, hassle, or the risk of leaving prohibited items at the airport, or worse, missing your flight due to delays. One interesting food item people might consider 'harmless' to carry in their cabin baggage is dry coconut, often part of temple prasad. However, you'll have to leave the copra (dried white flesh inside the coconut) or dry coconut at the airport if you carry it in your hand baggage. Wondering why? Read on!

Why Coconuts Cannot Be Carried In Hand Baggage

IndiGo Airlines explained on social media platform X, "Dry coconut is a highly flammable object; hence, carrying it in check-in luggage is not permitted." They further added in the comments that "dry coconut is not permitted in either hand baggage or checked baggage."
Dry coconut contains a high amount of oil (used to produce coconut oil) that is highly flammable. It can cause a fire if it encounters heat inside the aircraft.

Possibly referring to tender coconut, an X user asked in the same thread, "Can wet coconut be carried on IndiGo flights?" and received a no in reply.

How Can We Carry Coconut On A Flight?

It is best to avoid carrying coconut on flights altogether. If you must, SpiceJet Airlines explains on their website, "Coconut is only permitted for carriage in checked-in baggage if cut into small pieces. Dry coconut or copra is not permitted in either cabin or checked-in baggage."

Coconut and International Travel

According to The Independent, the International Air Transport Association's Dangerous Goods Register (IATA) categorizes coconut meat as a Class 4 risk in cargo. Dried coconut is marked as a "flammable solid liable to spontaneous combustion" that could "emit flammable gases when in contact with water." Copra dust may be ignited by a single spark, and the fruit's fat decomposition can also lead to a risk of self-heating, says the IATA. However, travelling by air with retail-packaged coconut products is permitted.

Ingredients:

  • Whole wheat flour - 1 3/4 cups
  • Semolina - 1/4 cup
  • Desiccated Coconut - 1/4 cup

Chhath Puja 2022: Just like kheer, Rasiyaw is also a popular sweet.

4. Rasiyaw (Rice Kheer) with Puri/Roti (Chapati)

Rasiyaw is basically rice kheer, but in place of sugar, it has jaggery (or gur). It is prepared almost like the regular kheer with rice, water, and milk. This dessert completes the Chhath puja meal. It is exclusively offered to Surya Devta before serving for consumption. It is best paired with Dal Puri/Puri/Roti.

Ingredients:

  • Rice 50 grams (1/4 cup )
  • Ghee - 1Tbsp
  • Cardamom - 3-4 Pcs
  • Milk - 1000ml
  • Sugar - 4-5 Tbsp. Adjust to taste
  • Chopped nuts - 3-4 Tbsp
  • Rose Water, Kesar& Kewra - 1 Tbsp (Optional)

Instructions-

  1. Rinse the rice until water turns clear.
  2. Then soak the rice in enough water for 20 to 30 minutes. Once 30 minutes are up, drain the rice using a colander and set aside.
  3. Heat a heavy bottom pan on medium heat. Then add 1 teaspoon of ghee to it and then add the soaked & drained rice.
  4. Add 3-4 crushed green cardamom pods.
  5. Toss the rice with the ghee and cardamom for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring constantly until aromatic.
  6. Then add the milk to the pan and stir well. Set heat to medium-high.
  7. Let the milk come to a boil, this will take around 10-12 minutes. Stir in between so that milk doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan.
  8. Once the milk has come to a boil, lower the heat to low and let the kheer cook for around 25 minutes on low heat. Stir every 2 minutes or so. The milk would turn thick and the rice will be completely cooked. If you want more thick kheer, cook for 15 more minutes at this point.
  9. Add in the sugar and mix. Also, add in the nuts.
  10. Cook the kheer for 5 more minutes. The sugar should dissolve completely. Don't worry if your kheer doesn't look very thick at this point. It will continue to thicken as it cools down.
  11. Remove pan from heat. Stir in rose water, Kewra, and Kesar (if using). Garnish with more nuts and serve kheer warm or chilled.
  12. You can chill it also before eating or can eat hot as well.

No More Soggy Mushrooms! This Viral Hack Will Help You Cook Them Perfectly

Mushrooms are super versatile and can be used in all kinds of dishes. You can get creative with them by grilling, sauteing, baking, roasting, or stir-frying to make a delicious meal. Pair them with rice, roti, or naan, or enjoy them as an appetiser for their soft, chewy texture and rich flavour. However, since mushrooms contain over 90 percent water, cooking them can be a bit tricky. If not done right, they can turn grey and soggy, making the dish taste bland. But don't worry - a recent viral hack shows how you can prevent this and keep them fresh. Digital creator Kathleen Ashmore has shared a video on Instagram demonstrating a step-by-step guide to preparing perfect mushrooms. Her key tip?

Also Read: Viral Hack: How To Use Measuring Spoon Without The Hassle Of Washing It Again And Again

Dry the mushrooms in a pan so they can 'sweat out' and release moisture. In the clip, she says, "When I was in culinary school, I learned how to properly cook mushrooms to make them golden and caramelised instead of grey and soggy. The first thing you need to know is that mushrooms are full of water. So, I start them in a dry pan to let them sweat. Once they begin to dry, I add my fat - either oil or butter. I also wait until the end to salt them, as salt draws out moisture." She urged culinary enthusiasts not to 'overcrowd the pan' and to cook the mushrooms 'until they are nice and golden brown.' Take a look:

Internet users quickly reacted to the video, leaving numerous comments in response. One person wrote, "Thank you! I love mushrooms, and these look so freaking good." Another added, "Yup! Exactly how I cook them, I learned after trial and tribulation." A third commented, "Yes! My mom told me the same thing: get them dry out of the mushrooms." "What if I'm adding onions? Should I do them before the mushrooms, after the mushrooms, or at the same time?" asked another user. A fifth user noted, "I learned this when I was 10. To be fair, I learned it from Julia versus Julie." "Thanks for sharing," said another comment. Another person wrote, "I have been cooking them ALL wrong!"

You can savour them as an evening snack or serve them as a starter at dinner parties.

What To Serve With Mexican-Style French Fries?

Mexican-style French fries taste good on their own. However, if you'd like to pair them with an accompaniment, opt for salsa or mayonnaise. You can also enjoy them with any other creamy or spicy dip of your choice, such as sour cream or guacamole.
