Experts Find Plant-Based Meat Alternatives Are Healthier For Your Heart Than Meat, Here Is What You Can Eat

Plant-based meat alternatives are highly processed plant-based food products that typically replace meat in the diet. These foods may have a taste, texture, or appearance similar to meat but do not contain meat. In recent years, the demand for plant-based meat products has grown significantly, with many people who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet opting for these foods in their diet. However, little is known about how these meat alternatives may impact our health. Researchers including lead author Matthew Nagra, ND, Vancouver, BC, Canada, sought to review the available literature to better understand the relationship between heart health risk and consumption of plant-based meat alternatives.

The authors of the review article studied the research published from 1970 to 2023 on plant-based meat alternatives, their contents, nutritional profiles, and their impact on cardiovascular disease risk factors, such as cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

Here Are Some Positive Results For Plant-Based Meat As Revealed By The Analysis:

  • On average, plant-based meat alternatives tend to have a more heart-healthy nutritional profile than meat, although the high sodium content of some products may be of concern.
  • Plant-based meat alternatives have been shown to improve some cardiovascular risk factors, including cholesterol levels, in several randomized controlled trials.
  • Plant-based meat alternatives have not been shown to raise blood pressure, despite the high sodium content of some products.

Word Of Caution

While plant-based meat alternatives may have positive health outcomes, experts suggest "it may be beneficial to choose options that are lower in saturated fat and sodium if consuming them regularly."

1. Tofu

2. Mushrooms

3. Jackfruit

4. Tempeh

Tempeh is a traditional Indonesian food item made from fermented soybeans. It has a long history of being used as a protein-rich meat substitute. Cooked tempeh crumbles easily and can be used in place of ground meat. It also absorbs sauces well like tofu.

5. Black Beans

Black bean burgers are a popular, nutritious alternative to meat-based counterparts. Robust in flavour and packed with protein, black beans offer a hearty texture and earthy taste, making them an excellent meat substitute.

22% Of Pani Puri Samples In Karnataka Do Not Meet Safety Standards: FSSAI

A recent inspection by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has shown that nearly 22% of pani puri samples collected from across the state did not meet safety standards. This comes a few days after food safety officials banned artificial colouring in kebabs, gobi manchurian and cotton candy. Recently, they inspected the pani puri stalls and even some well-known eateries. The samples were collected from 79 places in Karnataka. Out of these, 41 were found to be unsafe because they contained artificial colours and even cancer-causing agents, as per a Deccan Herald report. 

Another 18 were considered to be of poor quality and unsafe for consumption. Chemicals like Brilliant Blue, Sunset Yellow and Tartrazine were found in the samples collected by the department officials.

Speaking to the daily, Srinivas K, Commissioner of Food Safety, said that the decision to test the quality of pani puri was made after the authority received many complaints.

Srinivas added that since pani puri is a popular chaat item, they received many complaints about its quality. Samples were collected from all types of outlets, from roadside eateries to well-known restaurants, across Karnataka. The test results showed that a significant number of samples were unfit for consumption.

The Commissioner of Food Safety added that officers are currently analysing the results to better understand the impact of these chemicals. He also assured that FSSAI will enforce safety standards on smaller eateries and take action against the offenders.

"From a simple stomach upset to cardiac diseases, these artificial colours could cause a number of health issues. A few may also cause autoimmune diseases or even renal damage. It is very important that we stop their use since they have no other value, but to make food visually attractive," Dr Vishal Rao, Dean-Centre for Academic Research, HCG Cancer Centre, was quoted as saying.

Earlier, FSSAI conducted inspections at over 200 bus stands in Karnataka, targeting more than 700 shops. The shops were selling expired products or operating without FSSAI licencing. A senior FSSAI official told The New Indian Express that during the inspection, they found an outlet at Malur bus stand in Kolar district selling only expired items, including chips, soft drinks, juices, snacks and biscuits. FSSAI has temporarily shut the shop.

2. Be Mindful Of Batter Consistency

"Noodle Gol Gappa" Anyone? Unique Food Combo Gets A Thumbs Down From Foodies

Gol Gappa aka paani puri is an emotion. The crunchy poori is a true wonder in itself. Combined with aloo masala and khatta-meetha paani, the flavourful explosion in your mouth is bound to give you a foodgasm. But food experiments have attacked this favourite snack too. In a recent video doing the rounds on the internet, a street vendor was seen preparing gol gappa minus any potato stuffings or the tangy-spicy flavourful water. Instead, noodles were added to the pooris. Found the combination uncanny? Social media users echoed a similar sentiment. 

The video was dropped on Instagram by food vlogger Kashish. “Noodles waala gol gappa,” read the text in the clip. It begins with the vendor making a small hole in the middle of the crispy poori. Next, he stuffs them with noodles and pours a generous quantity of mustard sauce. The process is repeated for a thicker filling and voila, noodle gol gappes are ready to be served. The vlogger takes a bite and from her delightful expressions, it seems that she thoroughly enjoyed the “unique” gol gappes.

Besides the Noodles Gol gappa, there were three more options available: Sukhe Golgappe at ₹ 10, and Cream and Tandoori Golgappe at ₹ 15.

Soon after the video was dropped on the platform, foodies were quick to react to it. “Gol-gappe hum sharminda hai, tere kaatil abhi zinda hai (Gol gappe, we are ashamed, your murderer is still alive),” commented a critical food enthusiast. 

Another sought “Justice for gol gappa”

“Noodle wala burger pizza samosa ab gol gappa. Ab bhindi, karele wala samosa pizza gol gappa yeh sab aayega (Previously it was noodle-burger, pizza, and samosa. Now it is noodle gol gappa. Next, it will be ladyfinger and bitter gourd pizza, and gol gappa),” wrote a disappointment individual. 

Someone else called the noodle gol gappa “Unhealthy”

Amid this, a user found the item resembling a “Mini burger

“RIP gol gappa with noodles. May you rest in eternal peace,” read a sarcastic remark.
