5 Smart Ways To Use The Versatile Milk:

1. Cooling your mouth:

Have you ever taken a sip of a hot cup of tea just to end up burning your tongue? Or did you just eat something that's too spicy for our taste buds? Let's agree, we all have been there, and a glass of water doesn't help in this case. So, what's the next best option? We say - a glass of milk. The casein protein found in milk helps dissolve the burning sensation and soothe your tongue instantly.

2. Soothe skin:

Much like your tongue, milk also helps soothe any kind of irritation on your skin. Be it sunburn or wound, washing it with a mix of milk and honey helps prevent bacterial attack. Prepare mix with warm milk and honey and soak the wound.

3. Freshening frozen meat/fish:

Fresh fish and meat taste delicious. But unfortunately, we hardly get time to buy fresh food from the market every day. And hence, most of us buy it in bulk and store it in refrigerator for later use. But that's where a glass of milk comes to the rescue. Thaw the frozen food in a bowl of milk and let it set for a fresher taste and flavour.

Are you worried about your worn-out silverware? We suggest, using some milk to polish them to get back the sparkle. You can also use soured milk to get the job done. The protein found in milk does all the heavy lifting when it comes to cleaning the silverware.

5. Alleviate bug bite:

Be it a bug bite or a bee bite, we suggest the first line of action should be soaking the affected area in milk, especially powdered milk. Prepare a paste with milk powder and water and dab it on the affected area. The milk enzymes instantly help neutralize the itch.

So, what are you waiting for? Be mindful and make the most of the versatile milk in your daily life.

Tomato Ketchup Beyond Cooking: 6 Surprising Uses Of Tomato Ketchup:

1. Shine your utensils:

Tomato ketchup is acidic, making it a great cleaning agent for your utensils. So, when you have tough stains at the base of a pan or a bad black spot on a copper vessel, just put a few drops of ketchup and scrub it off. You can also use a pinch of salt for added coarseness for scrubbing.

2. Clean your hands:

If you have been tired of the strong garlic or fish smell on your fingers after cooking and eating, then your favourite ketchup is there to the rescue. As mentioned earlier, ketchup can be a great cleaning agent and the acidic properties can dissolve the bacteria, causing the stink. Apply some ketchup over your fingers and palm and rinse it under running water.

3. Dissolve rust:

If you find rust on any of your iron/cast iron utensils or any appliances in the house, we suggest resorting to some tomato ketchup for an easy solution. Simply cover the rust area with ketchup and let it sit for about 15-20 minutes. Then scrub it with a wire brush to find the acid in the ketchup dissolving the rust.

No Tobacco Day 2024: Quit Smoking With These 7 Foods You Already Have In Your Fridge

No Tobacco Day 2024: Every year on May 31, the world observes No Tobacco Day. This initiative focuses on raising awareness about the harmful health effects of tobacco use and encouraging people to quit smoking. Each year, new strategies and solutions emerge to address this habit. Surprisingly, one of these solutions comes from our kitchens - food! Can you imagine overcoming your nicotine addiction with the help of food? If not, we are here to help.

Also Read: World No Tobacco Day: 9 Reasons Why You Need Kick The Butt Now

We had an exclusive conversation with Dr Swati Gupta, Professor at the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, Subharti Dental College and Hospital, Meerut, to gain insights into which foods play a crucial role in managing and reducing tobacco cravings. "Tobacco contains around 5000-7000 chemicals, 50-60 of which are carcinogens, meaning they can cause cancer. Nicotine, a chemical found in tobacco, is highly addictive as it releases pleasure hormones like dopamine, acetylcholine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. Tobacco increases the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, memory loss, digestive problems, and more," she explained.

However, Dr Gupta adds that certain food choices along with lifestyle changes can help curb your tobacco cravings.

Here Are 7 Surprising Foods That Help You Kick Tobacco Cravings To The Curb:

According to Dr Swati Gupta, certain foods can help curb your tobacco cravings to some extent. Since the withdrawal symptoms are intense in the initial days of quitting smoking, certain foods can be used as substitutes for your cravings.

1. Peppermint

As per the expert, peppermint - also called pudina in Hindi - in the form of gums, candies, or toffee can help you counter tobacco withdrawal. In fact, aromatherapy with peppermint is also quite an effective alternative. Peppermint in general can help increase the dopamine levels of the brain without the need to consume tobacco.

2. Fruits And Vegetables

When you smoke cigarettes, the body's absorption of vitamin D and calcium reduces while the need for vitamin C increases. Fresh produce, as per Dr. Gupta, in the form of fruits and vegetables is packed with micronutrients and antioxidants that can help you stay hydrated and also deal with your tobacco cravings. "Incorporate fruits like muskmelon, watermelon, berries, oranges, etc. which will keep you nourished and curb your nicotine cravings. But avoid fatty foods," she added.

3. Water

It is essential to drink water not just to keep yourself hydrated but also to deal with your cravings. Dr Gupta says, "It is well documented that drinking water is one of the essential parts of the 4Ds to handle cravings of tobacco addiction - 4Ds: delay, distract, drink water, deep breaths." So whenever you have a tobacco craving next, distract yourself with a glass of water. "But please avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks as they can increase your tobacco cravings."

4. Vegetable and Spice Sticks

"We use these as a part of behavioural therapy," said Dr Gupta. If you feel like you don't have enough willpower to stop your tobacco craving, then look for alternatives. Dr Gupta suggests consuming sticks of carrots, celery, cinnamon sticks, and even nuts to reverse the harmful effects of tobacco. These foods are also rich in micronutrients and antioxidants that nourish your body.

5. Milk

It may sound unusual, but consuming milk and other dairy products can actually make cigarettes taste worse. According to Dr Gupta, drinking milk or eating yogurt could be helpful when dealing with cravings or trying to cut down on smoking. This advice is supported by a 2007 research study involving 209 cigarette smokers.

6. Gum and Mints

"Whenever you have a cigarette craving, have a gum or a mint," said Dr. Gupta. Both gum and mints last for a long time, so you can pop one in your mouth and keep chewing or sucking until your craving subsides. "It takes 90 seconds to manage your cravings, so keep it handy at all times," she adds.

7. Fresh Lime Juice

If you are looking for an alternative to market-sold nicotine gums, then switch to fresh lime juice. As mentioned above, your body craves vitamin C after you smoke. Dr Gupta suggests consuming fresh lime juice. "Limes also have antibacterial properties. So it can help restore your immune system if you smoke."

Are Foods Enough To Curb Your Tobacco Cravings?

"No!" said Dr. Gupta. When it comes to controlling your smoking and tobacco cravings, your lifestyle also plays a great role. The food can be a catalyst to your journey but not your ending point. "The first two days when you stop smoking, it is relatively easier to curb your craving. But on the third day, it accelerates." On the third day, Dr Swati suggests avoiding going to places where you think you can smoke. "But even if the craving doesn't subside, opt for these food alternatives."

Aside from this, Dr. Gupta also suggests maintaining a healthy lifestyle. "Make sure to do at least 30 minutes of exercise every day, in the morning or evening. Hydrate yourself. Use healthy food substitutes for chewing instead of banking on nicotine replacement therapy."

Smart Kitchen Hacks: 5 Quick Tips To Ward Fish Smell Off Your Fingers:

1. Rub lemon juice:

Now on, do not throw away the lemon wedge that is served along with the salad. Instead, keep that aside and rub it on your hands before washing it with water. The citric acid in lemon juice reacts with the skin to break down the strong odour of fish. You can also use vinegar instead.

2. Soak hands in baking soda water:

Baking soda has popularly been used as a cleaning ingredient and air freshener due to its natural absorbent properties. This makes it great for cleaning your hands as well. All you need to do is mix baking soda with water and soak your hands for a minute or two, and voila! You can also prepare a paste, and use it as a handwashing soap.

3. Rub some toothpaste:

Toothpaste is formulated to neutralise bacteria and improve your breath. The same mechanism works well to combat the fish stink. All you need to do is wash your hands in warm water and rub some toothpaste all over. When done, rinse it well under running water.

4. Grease hands with coconut oil:

Any kind of smell comes from bacteria and coconut oil (especially virgin coconut oil) is known to have great anti-bacterial properties. So, rub some coconut oil on your fingers and then wash your hands with regular soap and water.

5. Ketchup to the rescue:

Imagine yourself in a restaurant, struggling with the fish smell on your fingers. What would you do then? Just ask the hotel for some ketchup. You heard us. Much like lemon, the acidic nature of tomato ketchup helps remove the stink instantly. Gently rub some ketchup on your fingers and wash it well. That's it.

So now on, enjoy cleaning, cooking and eating your favourite fish anywhere you want, without any fear. Have a nice day!

Why Should You Consume Lemons in Summer?

Lemon is a quintessential summer food that you must consume to beat the summer heat. The best part is that you can incorporate lemon into several dishes and drinks - from salads to desserts! Here are four health-related reasons why this little yellow fruit (often mistaken for a vegetable) can benefit you.

1. Boosts Immunity

Mighty (sour) lemon is great for boosting your immunity. Lemons are packed with high amounts of Vitamin C and antioxidants that help boost your immune system. Apart from Vitamin C, lemon juice also contains calcium, iron, phosphorus, and potassium, supporting your overall health.

2. Lose Weight Faster

Want to shed those kilos? Add lemon to your diet! Lemons contain pectic fibre, which can curb your hunger and induce satiety. If you sip lemon-infused water, you can stay on your fitness track and also tantalize your taste buds.

3. Improves Digestion

The acidity present in lemons can help the production of digestive juices, which can help break down food easily and absorb nutrients better. It is because of the soluble fibre present that can slow down the digestion of sugars and starches.

4. Energise

Summer heat can make you lethargic and dull. But by incorporating lemon and lemon-based drinks into your diet, you can easily tackle it. The combination of Vitamin C, antioxidants, and electrolytes in lemon drinks can help fight fatigue and let you enjoy summer to the fullest.

Is It Safe To Have Fruits Before Bedtime?

According to Ayurvedic expert Dr Ashutosh Gautam, "Traditional medical practice states that there should be a proper gap between your meals and consumption of fruits as both have different effects on the digestive system. While fruits get digested faster, meals rich in protein and fibre require more time and gastric juices to digest. Hence, we advise having fruit early in the evening for better digestion and nourishment. However, this could be altered according to individual need."

Bangalore-based nutritionist Dr Anju Sood weighs in that the best practice is to avoid having anything right before hitting the bed, which may interfere with your sleep. "When it comes to fruits, eating them right before going to bed can release a lot of sugar, causing the spike in energy when your body should be preparing to slow down and rest."

While advising people to avoid fruits at night, Dr. Anju Sood said that people on a diet or people who get hungry in the middle of the night, may end up having a fruit or two as a healthy snack option. "But make sure the fruit you choose is not high in sugar to avoid unnecessary energy spikes in the middle of the night."

We say, while eating fruits always load you with umpteen nutrients and induce better sleep, the best practice is to avoid it just before hitting the bed. However, it is always better to consult an expert to customize your diet as per your health needs.

Of All The Ingredients, Why Should You Use Vinegar For Cleaning?

A kitchen staple, vinegar - especially white vinegar - is hailed for its cleaning abilities because of its acidic nature. When used in kitchen cleaning, vinegar can reduce grease, grime and mineral deposits that can make your kitchen look messy. The best part about using vinegar as a cleaning agent is that it is non-toxic, environmentally safe and does not dig a hole in the pocket. You can use vinegar as a safe alternative to market-brought chemical-laden cleaning products.

Which Spots Should You Clean In Your Kitchen Using Vinegar?

1. Countertops

Kitchen countertops undergo constant use which makes them prone to stains, spills and bacteria. For this, vinegar is perfect since it effectively cleans and disinfects without leaving harmful residues that can contaminate your food. To use vinegar for cleaning countertops, mix equal parts of white vinegar and water and transfer the solution to a spray bottle. In case of stubborn stains, let the vinegar-water solution sit on the countertop for a few minutes before wiping.

Pro Tip: Avoid using this vinegar-water solution on natural stone countertops like granite or marble, as its acidic nature can damage these surfaces.

2. Sink And Faucets

It goes without saying that the sink and faucet are frequently exposed to water, soap, and food particles, which leads to mineral deposits and grime buildup. This could make your sink look untidy. But thanks to vinegar's acidity, it could break down these deposits and ensure a shiny and clean sink area. Make a 1:1 ratio solution of vinegar and water. Spray or apply the solution to the faucet and scrub with a sponge or cloth. If your faucets have mineral deposits, soak a cloth in the vinegar solution wrap it around the area and then scrub. This will remove the deposit and make your faucet look as clean as new.

3. Refrigerator

The place where you store food should also always stay clean and hygienic at all times. This is why vinegar can be useful in refrigerator cleaning as it prevents cross-contamination and odors. Make a solution by mixing equal parts of white vinegar and water and transfer it to a spray bottle. Remove all the food and containers from your fridge and then spray the solution on the shelves, drawers, and walls of the refrigerator. Wipe off the solution with a clean cloth and focus on spills and stubborn spots.

4. Microwave

Microwaves, which are used for everything from heating food to defrosting, are prone to food splatters and spills, which can become tough to clean. A simple steam solution of vinegar and water can help loosen these residues, making it easy to wipe away stains. All you have to do is take a microwave-safe bowl and fill it with a 1:1 solution of vinegar and water. Place the bowl in the microwave and heat on high until it boils and produces steam. This process can take up to 10 minutes. Carefully remove the bowl and wipe off the interior using a clean cloth or sponge. This will liquify the stubborn stains and make it easier to clean them.

5. Coffee Maker

Do you use your coffee maker every day? Then chances are it has some stubborn stains that need to be removed. Regular descaling of your coffee maker is essential to prevent mineral buildup, which can affect the taste and efficiency of your coffee machine. Vinegar is a natural descaling agent that effectively removes these deposits. All you have to do is fill the coffee maker's reservoir with equal parts of vinegar and water. Run a brewing cycle without the coffee grounds. After the cycle completes, replace the vinegar solution with clean water to remove any vinegar residues. This will make your coffee maker clean and fresh for use!
